About the Library

The mission of AISD libraries is to nurture a lifelong appreciation of reading and learning by assuring that students and staff have opportunities for successful access, evaluation, and use of information and literature.

In order to fulfill this mission, the library provides open access to library services 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Students come to the library on a weekly schedule with their class as well as any time during the day if acceptable with their classroom teacher.

Additionally, Barton Hills celebrates reading by sponsoring a Book Fair each December. Students visit the Fair two times with their classes, once to browse and once to make their purchases. The Book Fair provides the perfect opportunity to make selections for personal enjoyment, gifts, and the classroom.

BHE PTA Wins Shirley Igo PTA/Library Collaboration Award

The Texas Library Association, in conjunction with the Texas PTA, are proud to announce that the Barton Hills Elementary PTA is the winner of the Shirley Igo PTA/Library Collaboration Award for 2008 for their exemplary support of the Barton Hills Library.  It is an honor that could only be given to a PTA that has gone far over and above any expectations…and that certainly applies to the Barton Hills PTA!  Congratulations to our PTA for their outstanding support of our school library!  It is a thrill beyond words that people who worked so hard and do so much for our library will be honored with this award.

Box Tops for Education

Clip the Box Tops from participating General Mills products and write your child’s name and teacher on the back.  Send them to school with your child to place in the “Box Tops” box during library time.  Each month the librarian draws two Box Tops out of the box, and both of those students win a free book from our Book Fair.  All of the Box Tops are mailed to General Mills, who send us 10¢ per Box Top, which is used to purchase books for our library. Click here for more info about Box Tops for Education.

Book Recommendations

Kindergarten-2nd Grade:
The 2x2 Reading List is a new project of the Texas Library Association. It recommends 20 books for children as young as age two up to second grade.

3rd-5th Grade:
The TEXAS BLUEBONNET AWARD reading program encourages children all across the state to read more, to read a greater variety of books, and to select their favorite book. Each year at Barton Hills Elementary, students who read five or more of the books from this list are invited to a pizza voting party!

6th Grade:
The Texas Lone Star Reading List is a reading incentive program designed for young adults in the 6th-8th grades. Students who participate in this reading program at Barton Hills are invited to an ice cream sundae party!
